Ford Explorer Lemon Law Lawyer in San Diego

Your Explorer went in for a camera that kept going black, then for a rear axle bolt recall, then for the camera again. A Ford Explorer lemon law lawyer sorts those visits by defect, because California counts repair attempts per nonconformity.

That word means a defect that substantially impairs the SUV's use, value or safety.

An Explorer that keeps returning for the same failure, recall or not, can qualify for a buyback or a replacement. A buyback, called restitution, refunds what you paid, and a replacement is a substantially identical new vehicle. You can also check any VIN through NHTSA's recall search tool.

Cline APC limits its caseload to lemon law and consumer warranty claims. Its offices sit at 7855 Ivanhoe Avenue in La Jolla and 14280 Danielson Street in Poway.

If your Explorer keeps going back for one failure, call (888) 982-6915.

Should a Lawyer Hear About an Explorer Camera That Keeps Going Black?

Once the same failure returns, yes. Ford's recall filings describe a camera image that goes black, a rear axle failure and a sudden loss of drive power. They also describe stalls after the engine computer resets, a fuel line leak and a defroster that quits.

For example, put the symptom on each repair order in plain words like these.

  • The backup camera goes black in a parking garage.
  • Something clunks from the rear when I accelerate.
  • A driveline warning lights up on the dash.
  • The engine stalls or the park system acts up after the computer resets.
  • The fuel smell comes back after the fuel line recall.
  • The defroster quits on a foggy morning.

Say your 2021 Explorer's rear camera went black twice in a Mission Valley parking garage before any recall letter arrived. Then came one camera recall, an expanded camera recall and a software recall for the same video failure. So, depending on the dates, that history could reach four or more attempts on one defect.

Does My Explorer's Model Year Change What a Ford Explorer Lemon Law Lawyer Looks For?

It does. The axle bolt campaigns reach 2020 to 2022 Explorers, and the camera software follow-up reaches 2020 to 2023. The plug-in hybrid battery campaign covers 2020 to 2022 models with the 3.0-liter system. Later campaigns reached 2025 and 2026 Explorers, and some of those remedies are still pending.

Say you bought a 2025 Explorer in Oceanside, and it has two stall visits and a brake visit in its first year. The Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) dates Ford's election into the newer procedures April 25, 2025. It covers Explorers sold in 2025 and earlier. Suit is then due one year after the applicable warranty ends. The outer limit is six years from delivery, plus pauses for repair days and up to 60 days after a pre-suit notice. That notice, a written demand, is required only before a suit seeking civil penalties.

How Does One Explorer Defect Stack Up Recall Visits for a Lemon Law Attorney?

A recall is Ford's report to NHTSA that a defect exists in a group of vehicles. As a result, it overlaps a lemon claim only when the recalled defect keeps returning or keeps the Explorer in the shop. Campaign 23V342000 expanded 23V022000, and 25V159000 later addressed repairs done incorrectly, but those matter only if the defect returned in your Explorer.

Say you live in Clairemont, and Mossy Ford replaced your motor mount fasteners under 20V788000 at 9,000 miles. Two later visits for a driveline clunk may then trace to that same defect. For that reason, a Ford Explorer lemon law lawyer compares the technician notes across all three visits before counting them together.

The 360-Degree Camera, Recalled and Then Recalled Again

Campaign 23V022000 came first, in January 2023. Four months later, campaign 23V342000 expanded and replaced it, reaching 442,973 vehicles. Dealers replaced the camera, and Explorers already repaired under 23V-022 also needed the new remedy. Then in March 2025, campaign 25V159000 updated the image processing software on 2020 through 2023 Explorers repaired incorrectly under 23V-342. Still, owners whose cameras never failed got the same letters, so a recall visit alone does not prove the defect.

Axle Bolt Software, Then Axle Bolt Hardware

A fractured rear axle mounting bolt can let the driveshaft disconnect. NHTSA's records say that can cause a loss of drive power, or a rollaway if the parking brake is not set. In March 2023, campaign 23V199000 updated software that an earlier campaign, 22V-255, had left without automatic parking brake application. Campaign 23V675000, filed October 6, 2023, then replaced the bolt and a bushing on 238,364 Explorers. In March 2025, 25V166000 reached 4,247 Explorers repaired incorrectly under 23V-199 or 22V-255.

Is a Ford Explorer Recall Visit a Lemon Law Repair Attempt?

It can be. California counts chances to repair, and a recall appointment is one of them when it addresses the nonconformity you complain about. Ford's dealer bulletin 22-2428 on harsh shifts also covers some 2020 through 2023 Explorers, the same bulletin at the center of Ford F-150 lemon law claims. The plug-in hybrid battery campaign raises the power-loss questions familiar from Mustang Mach-E lemon law claims. In an elected-track suit filed on or after January 1, 2025, section 871.26 makes Ford list the required field actions on your VIN.

Why Does My Lawyer Want the Campaign Number on Every Explorer Repair Order?

Each order should name the campaign number and say what was replaced or reprogrammed. The complaint line should record any rear clunk or driveline warning in your words. Vague entries make it harder to show that several visits addressed one defect.

For instance, say your 2026 Explorer sits at North County Ford on West Vista Way for five weeks awaiting a replacement engine. Those five weeks also belong in your file with receipts. A Ford Explorer lemon law lawyer uses the check-in and release dates on each order to prove them.

Crash-Only Recalls Versus Failures You Feel Every Day

The windshield bond in 26V024000, the airbag vent in 26V581000 and the crash-only fuel filler tube in 22V088000 rarely build a repair history. Campaign 26V202000 is different, because a defroster that quits on State Route 52 sends the Explorer back again. Likewise, a fuel smell that returns after the 22V685000 fuel line recall brings the SUV back, and each return visit counts.

A Long Block on Backorder and Days That Still Count

Campaign 26V343000 lists a replacement engine long block, with interim letters mailed June 5, 2026, and the remedy anticipated in November 2026. Days a dealer holds your Explorer while it waits can count toward the 30-day route. The defect must be a nonconformity, and the days must fall inside the 18-month window. Separately, section 1793.2(b) requires repair within 30 days unless you agree in writing or Ford cannot control the delay. On Ford's elected track, section 871.21 also pauses the filing deadline for those repair days.

When Do Repeat Explorer Recalls Reach the Presumption a Lemon Law Attorney Uses?

Section 1793.22(b) creates a presumption, a shortcut that treats Ford as having had a reasonable number of repair attempts, the fair number of chances it gets. In Ford lemon law claims, two visits inside 18 months or 18,000 miles qualify for a defect likely to cause death or serious bodily injury. Four for one nonconformity also qualify.

Say your 2022 Explorer had two axle bolt visits inside that window. Because the count runs per defect, the software visit and the hardware visit can count together. Even so, whether both addressed one defect depends on what each repair order says. More than 30 cumulative days in repair also qualifies, and missing all three routes does not end a claim.

Rollaway Risk Puts the Axle Bolt on the Two-Visit Route

A defect that can let the Explorer roll away or suddenly lose drive power can qualify as likely to cause death or serious bodily injury. Consequently, it belongs on the two-visit route in section 1793.22. The two-visit and four-visit routes need direct notice, a written notice to Ford itself, if the warranty materials disclosed that duty. If Ford gave you timely written notice of BBB Auto Line, its state-certified arbitration program, that program comes before the presumption.

Ford's Recall Buyback Offer Versus Ford Explorer Lemon Law Restitution

Campaign 22V454000 covered 776 Explorers and Aviators from 2022 whose engine rails may have been improperly heat-treated. NHTSA's record says owners whose rails need replacement get the option of a vehicle replacement or a buyback. That option, however, comes from Ford's recall remedy. Restitution under Civil Code section 1793.2, subdivision (d)(2)(B), adds taxes, fees and incidental costs to the price. It then subtracts the mileage offset, a deduction for miles driven before the first repair visit. At $54,000 and 10,000 miles, the offset is $4,500, and the buyback calculator runs your own figures.

When a Ford Explorer Bought in 2026 Uses the Older Lemon Law Procedure

The DCA list shows only Ford's 2025 election date, which covers sales in 2025 and earlier. For a 2026 purchase, section 871.29, subdivision (d), required Ford to tell you at the sale which procedure applies. If that notice names the older procedure, Commercial Code section 2725 sets a four-year limit that generally runs from tender of delivery. A warranty that expressly covers future performance can start that clock at discovery instead. Booklets also differ by model year. The 2026 Model Year Ford Warranty Guide gives a 2026-model Explorer 3 years or 36,000 miles of Bumper to Bumper coverage and 5 years or 60,000 of Powertrain, whichever comes first.

Is It Time to Show Your Recall Letters to a Ford Explorer Lemon Law Lawyer?

If one symptom came back after a recall, it is. Put the sales agreement, repair orders, recall letters, the procedure notice and rental receipts in one envelope. A free consultation with Cline APC at (888) 982-6915 then shows which visits count together and which deadline governs your purchase year.

Say a Mira Mesa family's 2022 Explorer is in the rail recall, and the dealer finds rails needing replacement. Before choosing between Ford's options, the family can have a Ford Explorer lemon law lawyer price the statutory remedy.

The San Diego lemon law attorneys at Cline APC review Explorer histories. Civil Code section 1794, subdivision (d), awards fees and costs only to a buyer who prevails. The firm explains its attorney fee arrangement at the first meeting. No one can promise a particular outcome.

Once your papers are in order, send your repair orders through the firm's online form.
