Under Civil Code section 1793.2, the replace-or-refund duty on a new vehicle belongs to FCA US LLC, not the dealer. A replacement is a substantially identical new vehicle, and restitution refunds what you paid.
Repeat electrical, display or stalling faults can bring a Compass under the Song-Beverly Act.

Does a Blank Uconnect Screen or a Shutdown at a Red Light Matter to a Jeep Compass Lemon Law Lawyer?
Owners filed 429 NHTSA complaints on 2021 to 2026 Compasses, and the electrical system leads at 180. A September 23, 2026, search found 130 descriptions mentioning the screen, radio, Uconnect or a display, and 44 mentioning start/stop. These are owner reports, not findings that any Compass is defective.
Forward collision avoidance drew 94 complaints, and 22 descriptions use phrases such as could not duplicate. The Compass record leans electrical, while Wrangler steering claims turn on the front end. If your Compass does any of these, have the dealer write it up using your words.
- The Uconnect screen or radio goes black or stops responding.
- The instrument cluster is too faint to read in daylight.
- The backup camera shows nothing in reverse.
- The engine shuts off at a light and restarts only after a pause.
- The forward collision system warns or acts in a way you cannot explain.
Say your 2022 Compass shuts off at the bottom of an Interstate 805 off-ramp and restarts after a pause. That event belongs on a repair order with the date, the place and any warning message. The dealer runs the diagnosis, while FCA owns the fix.
Which Compass Model Years Show Up Most in the Records a Lawyer Checks?
The 2022 model year accounts for 222 of the 429 complaints. Every FCA campaign NHTSA lists for 2021 to 2026 Compasses reaches the 2022, 2023 or 2026 model year. So your model year decides which campaigns to check first. Engine and power train complaints stay well under the electrical count.
| Model year | Engine complaints | Power train complaints | FCA campaigns reaching that year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 18 | 9 | None |
| 2022 | 36 | 19 | 22V248000, 23V058000, 23V576000, 24V436000 |
| 2023 | 7 | 6 | 23V576000, 24V436000 |
| 2024 | 7 | 6 | None |
| 2025 | 3 | 1 | None |
| 2026 | 0 | 0 | 26V531000 |
Those engine and power train counts come from NHTSA data pulled September 29, 2026. Say you are choosing between a used 2022 and a used 2023 Compass. Four campaigns reach some 2022 Compasses and two reach some 2023s, so run each VIN for open campaigns.
Can a Lawyer Use the Compass Cluster and Camera Recalls in a Lemon Law Claim?
Yes. A recall repair does not end the claim. A cluster or camera fault that returns after the remedy is a warranty repair for the dealer and a lemon law problem for FCA. So recall visits go on the same timeline as the repeat repairs, with their dates.
Say your 2023 Compass gets the cluster software update, and the screen goes dim again two months later. If the dim screen is a nonconformity, the recall visit can date the first attempt, the next order the second. NHTSA's recall lookup shows which campaigns remain open on your VIN.
Faint Daytime Cluster Displays Under 23V058000 and 23V576000
In 23V058000, FCA told NHTSA that the center cluster display on some 2022 Compasses may not be bright enough to see in daytime driving. NHTSA lists 90 potentially affected vehicles. The remedy includes a new windshield, a new headlamp switch and an added light sensor module. The later 23V576000 lists roughly 182,000 potentially affected 2022 and 2023 Compasses, where body control module software may keep the cluster brightness from adjusting. Dealers perform both remedies without charge.
Why a Compass Backup Camera Can Go Blank in Reverse
Campaign 24V436000 reaches 2022 and 2023 Compasses among many FCA models, because radio software may keep the rearview image from displaying. The 2026 campaign, 26V531000, again covers a camera image that may not appear in reverse. Campaign 22V248000, however, is different. It covers 114 potentially affected 2022 Compasses whose front head restraints were not welded properly. Keep that repair order anyway, since it still dates a visit.
Is a Compass Buyback Only FCA's Call, or Does a Lawyer Look at the Dealer Too?
Partly FCA's. A dealer cannot approve a buyback for FCA. It still controls how your complaint is written, how deeply the technician diagnoses it and how fast parts are ordered. It must also hand you paperwork on every warranty visit, and as the seller it carries its own implied warranty.
Say the service manager at Carvana Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Camino Del Rio South blames FCA for every delay. Section 7.1 of FCA's 2024 Jeep booklet also sends owners from the service manager to the dealership's owner, then to FCA's Customer Assistance Center. Ask that center for a case number, and write it on every later repair order.
Invoices and Work Orders Every Jeep Service Drive Owes You
Business and Professions Code section 9884.8 requires an invoice describing the labor and parts on every job, warranty work included. Civil Code section 1795.6 calls for a work order with the drop-off date and the date you heard the Compass was ready. Section 1793.1 requires printed language on warranty work orders explaining that repair time extends the warranty. Ask for the invoice before you leave, and note the advisor's name if the answer is no. The Bureau of Automotive Repair takes complaints about a shop's paperwork, but it does not order buybacks.
What the Selling Dealer Still Owes on a Jeep Compass Lemon Law Claim
Civil Code section 1792 attaches an implied warranty of merchantability to each retail sale, from the manufacturer and from the retail seller. Section 1791.1 defines merchantable in four parts, and fitness for ordinary use carries the weight for a car. On a new vehicle, section 1791.1(c) keeps that implied warranty at no less than 60 days and no more than one year. A defect that first appears in month 14 usually falls outside it, even while FCA's express warranty runs. Section 1792 also lets the dealer recover from FCA what it pays on that warranty.
Do Repairs at Three Different Jeep Stores Add Up When a Lawyer Counts Compass Visits?
Yes. A franchised Jeep dealer doing warranty work acts as FCA's agent. So visits at different stores all count toward a reasonable number of repair attempts, FCA's chances to fix it. For the repeat-repair routes, each visit must be a warranty attempt on the same nonconformity, a defect that substantially impairs use, value or safety.
Section 1793.22(b) of the Civil Code adds a shortcut, the presumption, for the first 18 months or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first. Two or more repairs of a nonconformity likely to cause death or serious bodily injury can trigger it. So can four or more repairs of the same nonconformity. Those two routes also need direct notice, written notice sent to FCA itself, at least once when the warranty calls for it. More than 30 cumulative days out of service for repair of nonconformities triggers it with no notice. The presumption then treats FCA as having had a reasonable number of repair attempts once its conditions are met. FCA may rebut it, and a Compass past the window can still qualify on its whole record.
Say your Compass went to Perry Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on National City Boulevard, then Mossy Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Auto Park Avenue. The third visit was on Camino Del Rio South. FCA pays each dealer for warranty work under Vehicle Code section 3065, so its claim records show every attempt it paid for. The firm's Jeep lemon law lawyers build that count across FCA's lineup.
When a Jeep Compass Lemon Law Lawyer Has to File on FCA's Elected Track
According to the Department of Consumer Affairs list, FCA elected the newer lemon law procedures on April 25, 2025. Section 871.30 extends that election to Compasses sold new in 2025 or earlier. On those, section 871.21 requires suit within one year after the applicable express warranty ends, and never more than six years after delivery. The booklet coverage for the defect is that warranty. Shop time for repairs pauses both clocks, as do up to 60 days following a pre-suit notice, a written demand to FCA.
Section 871.24 makes that written demand a requirement only for a suit that seeks civil penalties, meaning extra money for willful violations. FCA must have it 30 or more days before filing, and handing it to a service advisor does not count. FCA escapes penalties only with an offer within 30 days of receipt, completed within 60. Under section 871.29(d), FCA must name at the sale which procedure governs a Compass bought new in 2026 or later. CDSP Auto Line is Jeep's state-certified arbitration program on the Department of Consumer Affairs list. Section 1793.22(c) adds program days to the filing deadline.
Does a Secondhand Compass Still Get FCA's Buyback Duty?
Under Rodriguez v. FCA US, LLC (2024) 17 Cal.5th 189, a used vehicle with factory coverage left is not new unless FCA's new car warranty came with that sale. Rodriguez did not rule on certified pre-owned programs, and a certified Compass generally sits outside the new-vehicle remedy, though the question is not settled. A dealer's own used-car warranty brings duties under Civil Code section 1795.5, with an implied warranty of 30 days to three months. A Compass with a buyback history should carry a Lemon Law Buyback title brand under section 1793.23.
Adding Up a Compass Lemon Law Refund
Restitution returns the price paid or payable, with transportation charges and factory options, plus tax and official fees. Incidental damages, the towing, rental and repair costs a defect causes, are added. However, items a dealer or buyer installed that FCA did not make stay out. For the mileage offset, a deduction for use before the first visit for the defect, multiply the price by that odometer reading and divide by 120,000. So a $30,000 Compass first brought in at 6,000 miles carries a $1,500 offset, which the buyback calculator can check.
On the elected track, section 871.27 subtracts negative equity, leaves rebates out of the price and drops add-ons sold by outside companies. Add-ons the selling dealer supplied stay recoverable. Willful violations can add a civil penalty of up to twice actual damages under section 1794(c). A claim resting only on an implied warranty cannot carry one. When the buyer prevails, section 1794(d) adds costs and reasonable attorney fees to the judgment, and the firm explains its attorney fee terms first.

Say you hold orders from three stores but lost the first one. A Jeep Compass lemon law lawyer can tell you which store still has it and what FCA's records may show. On the elected track, disclosures after FCA answers a lawsuit run as they do in Jeep Grand Cherokee claims.
Before you decide anything, the firm explains each stage of a California lemon law claim. No one can promise what FCA or a dealer will do, and each decision stays with you.
