Jeep Wrangler Lemon Law Lawyer in San Diego
At 65 mph on Interstate 15, your Wrangler crosses a bump and the steering wheel starts slamming side to side. The dealer replaced a part, and weeks later the same shake came back. A Jeep Wrangler lemon law lawyer asks two questions first.

Is the shake a nonconformity likely to cause death or serious bodily injury? And was anything on the Jeep changed after you bought it?
Under the statute, a nonconformity is a defect that substantially impairs the Jeep's use, value or safety. If the shake is also likely to cause death or serious bodily injury, the two-repair route can apply. It covers the first 18 months or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first, and needs direct notice, a letter sent to FCA itself, at least once if the booklet requires it. The remedy is a buyback, a refund of what you paid, or a replacement, a substantially identical new Jeep. Run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before you call anyone.
Nothing but lemon law and warranty work comes through Cline APC, which meets Wrangler owners in La Jolla and Poway. Call (888) 982-6915, and tell the firm up front about any lift, tire change or stabilizer.
How Should You Describe Death Wobble to a Jeep Wrangler Lemon Law Lawyer?
Start with what the complaint descriptions show. Of 2,717 NHTSA complaints on 2021 to 2026 Wranglers, 302 use the word wobble and 254 use death wobble. Of those 302, 125 mention a bump and 173 mention a freeway, highway or interstate. These are owner accounts, not engineering findings.
Those counts come from a September 23, 2026, search of the complaint descriptions, and 473 of the complaints list the steering system. Put your own description on each repair order in plain words.
- The steering wheel slams side to side after a bump or expansion joint.
- The shake starts at freeway speed and stops only when you slow way down.
- The same shake returns weeks after a damper or track bar repair.
- The dealer's low-speed test loop finds nothing.
- A passenger feels the whole front end shake.
For example, say you live in Santee and feel the shake on State Route 52 right after a patched lane. Once you are safely stopped, write down the lane, the speed and the nearest exit.
Is a 2021 Wrangler More Prone to Wobble Than a 2024, and What Does a Lawyer Make of It?
Not on the numbers alone. Of the 302 wobble reports, 186 concern 2021 Wranglers, 59 concern 2022, 41 concern 2023 and 16 concern 2024. Older Jeeps have had more time and miles to generate reports. Only 19 reports describe the Jeep as stock, and 65 name the steering damper.
| Model year | Wobble reports | Share of the 302 | Engine complaints | Power train complaints |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 186 | 62% | 218 | 143 |
| 2022 | 59 | 20% | 91 | 63 |
| 2023 | 41 | 14% | 103 | 51 |
| 2024 | 16 | 5% | 543 | 196 |
The engine and power train columns reflect NHTSA data as of September 29, 2026, and they count owner reports, not findings. If you are weighing a used 2021 Unlimited against a 2024 Rubicon, a Jeep Wrangler lemon law lawyer would ask for each one's full service history.
Is There a Recall for Death Wobble, or Does a Lawyer Build the Claim Without One?
No 2021 to 2026 Wrangler recall covers it. NHTSA's data for those years held 32 recall campaigns on September 29, 2026. None describes a steering damper, a track bar or a front-end shake. A lemon claim does not need a recall, because it rests on your own repair history.
Several campaigns still touch the steering or the wheels, and each recall visit leaves a dated repair order. Campaign 26V363000, reported in June 2026, names 2021 to 2025 Wranglers, including the 4xe, along with Gladiators. FCA says the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring may overheat and cause a fire, even when parked with the ignition off. Under 24V199000, the steering column control module on certain 2023 and 2024 Wranglers may not be welded properly. That can keep the driver's airbag from deploying.
In July 2026, FCA also filed 26V456000 for some 2026 Wrangler and Gladiator steel wheels whose walls may be too thin. Say your 2023 Wrangler goes in for the steering column recall and comes back with the same shake. The recall visit and the wobble visits belong on one timeline.
What Should a Lawyer See on the Repair Order When the Dealer Can't Reproduce the Shake?
Ask for the complaint line in your own words and a road test at the speed and on the road where the shake happens. Ask too for technician notes on what was inspected and a printout of any alignment readings. Even a could-not-duplicate visit shows you presented the Jeep for repair.
Say the advisor writes customer states vibration. Ask that the line read violent front-end shake after bumps at 55 mph and faster. Read it before you sign, because a vibration note can later be read as a tire balance issue.
Paying for an Alignment After 12,000 Miles on a Wrangler Lemon Law Claim
FCA's 2024 Wrangler booklet covers alignment and wheel balancing for one year or 12,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Basic coverage runs 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. So a wobble visit at 14,000 miles may get billed as a paid alignment. Pay if you must, keep the invoice and ask that the order state the steering complaint. Section 1793.2(d)(2)(B) folds reasonable repair costs actually incurred into a buyback as incidental damages, meaning costs the defect forced on you. Tires carry their own maker's warranty, but that does not move the steering and suspension out of FCA's.
Riding Along on a Freeway Road Test
A test at 30 mph on surface streets says little about a shake that starts at 60. Put the request for a freeway test in writing on the drop-off paperwork, and ride along if the dealer allows it. Name the stretch, whether an expansion joint on Interstate 805 or a patched lane near your exit, plus the lane and speed. The notes should then record the road, the speed, whether the shake appeared and which parts were measured.
How Many Wobble Repairs Before a Lawyer Can Call a Jeep Wrangler a Lemon in California?
Take a shake that is a nonconformity likely to cause death or serious bodily injury. Two or more repairs within 18 months or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first, can then be enough under section 1793.22, subdivision (b)(1). That route needs direct notice to FCA at least once if the booklet requires it.
Those conditions create a presumption, a legal shortcut. Once its conditions are met, it treats FCA as having had a reasonable number of repair attempts, meaning enough tries to fix the Jeep. FCA can try to rebut it. Past the window the presumption is gone, but section 1793.2(d) still applies and you prove the attempts were enough. Say you bought a 2023 Wrangler Sahara at Jack Powell Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Auto Park Way in Escondido. The dealer replaced the damper at 6,000 miles and adjusted the track bar at 11,000 within the first year, and you wrote to FCA. The firm's Jeep lemon law lawyers can treat those as two attempts at one nonconformity, depending on the orders.
A Damper, a Track Bar and a Tie Rod Counted as One Defect
Section 1793.22 speaks of the same nonconformity, defined by its effect rather than by part number. So a damper, a track bar and a tie rod end can be three attempts at one wobble when the orders describe one symptom. Four or more repairs of the same nonconformity form a second route. Those two repair routes need direct notice only when FCA clearly disclosed it. Section 7.1 of the 2024 Wrangler booklet asks for a letter to the Customer Assistance Center. More than 30 cumulative days out of service for repair of nonconformities form a third route, with no notice needed. A single visit past 30 days can also break the separate repair deadline in section 1793.2(b). Only your written agreement or a delay beyond FCA's control extends it.
Shake First or Lift First in a Jeep Wrangler Lemon Law Case?
Section 1794.3 of the Civil Code carves out any defect caused by unauthorized or unreasonable use once the Jeep was sold. On a lifted Wrangler, FCA may say the lift caused the shake. So the order of events is the first evidence of cause. A wobble documented while the Jeep was stock stays evidence. But a wobble first seen after a lift puts FCA's argument at its strongest. Of the 302 reports, 23 mention a stabilizer, and an add-on unit may quiet the symptom the dealer needs to see. Keep the factory damper, and list each modification with its date and mileage. Section 871.26 will require you to disclose each one if a suit under FCA's election is filed with counsel. The firm weighs the same questions for lifted and trail-driven Jeeps in Poway.
How Long You Have to Sue FCA Over a Wrangler
FCA's election into the newer lemon law procedures is dated April 25, 2025, on the Department of Consumer Affairs list. Section 871.30 applies it to Wranglers sold in 2025 and earlier. For those Jeeps, section 871.21 requires suit within one year after the applicable express warranty ends, and never more than six years after delivery. That warranty is the booklet coverage for the defect. Repair time is added back, along with as many as 60 days after a pre-suit notice, a written demand to FCA. Under section 871.24, that letter is needed only when the suit will ask for civil penalties, a court-ordered sum added to damages for willful conduct. FCA must receive it 30 days or more before you file. If FCA offers a repurchase or replacement within 30 days of receipt and completes it within 60, penalties fall away. Missing either date leaves them available.
For a Wrangler sold new in 2026 or later, section 871.29(d) says FCA must name the governing procedure at the sale. When FCA gave timely written notice of CDSP Auto Line, the arbitration program the Department of Consumer Affairs certifies for Jeep, section 1793.22(c) puts it before the presumption. Program days also extend the filing deadline.
Wrangler Lemon Law Refund Math When the Jeep Wears a Lift
Restitution pays back the price paid or payable with factory options, plus tax, official fees and incidental damages. Dealer or owner add-ons that FCA did not build are excluded, and a replacement arrives stock. Under FCA's election, section 871.27(b)(2) makes a lift the selling dealer supplied on the contract recoverable. On a $48,000 Wrangler first brought in for the shake at 2,500 miles, the mileage offset, a deduction for miles before that visit, is $1,000. The buyback calculator runs your own numbers. A willful violation can bring a civil penalty capped at twice actual damages under section 1794(c). A buyer who prevails recovers costs and reasonable attorney fees from FCA under section 1794(d).
