Car recalls are inevitable. Every year, we see new problems come up in both old and newer models. It’s important to understand that no auto brand is perfect – and just because you see them on this list, it doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t buy from them. Mistakes in the factory happen, even with all the QA processes in place.
As a California lemon law attorney, we get asked about car recalls a lot. Our job is to simply state the facts.
So what car brand has the most recalls in 2023?
In this post, we want to answer this question – and provide some extra details. Let’s get moving.
1. Ford
Ford tops the 2023 list of what car brand has the most recalls, coming in at 54 total recalls. This is the third consecutive year Ford has led the pack as the most recalled car brand in the United States. – with 68 in 2022.
There were 5,692,135 Ford vehicles affected by car recalls in 2023 – with the most notable recall being the F-150 parking lights defect.
2. Chrysler
Second on our list of the most recalled car brand of 2023 is Chrysler, with 45 car recalls. These recalls affected 2,732,398 vehicles, which is 17% of the total number of Chrysler vehicles on the road. The most prominent car recall was on the 2023-2024 Ram models due to a defect with the steering column control module, impacting over 142,000 vehicles.
3. BMW
BMW takes third on our list of most car recalls by brand, coming in at 29. The recalls throughout 2023 impacted 332,949 BMW models, making up 11% of the total BMWs on the roadways. The biggest recall happened in November for engine issues, in which more than 155,000 vehicles were recalled.
4. Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz comes in at fourth on this list with 27 car recalls – impacting 395,504 vehicles, which is 10% of the total. Most of the recalls were due to faulty electrical systems, wiring, and issues with the fuel pump.
Another notable recall involved more than 40,000 vehicles because they may not have been equipped with an inspection gauge to measure the wear on brake pads – affecting a plethora of models manufactured from 2019-2021.
5. General Motors
General Motors takes spot number five on our list of the most recalled car brands of 2023, with a grand total of 22, impacting 1,993,285 vehicles. This number makes up 10% of the GM total vehicles on the roadways. The biggest recall was due to an air bag defect, which impacted more than one million vehicles.
6. Jaguar Land Rover
Sixth on our list of most car recalls by brand is Jaguar Land Rover, with 19. These car recalls impacted 80,829 vehicles, making up 8% of the total on the road. One of the most notable and recent recalls by Jaguar Land Rover stemmed from engine-mounted oil cooler hoses being unsecured, which affected 1,520 vehicles.
7. Honda
Coming in at number seven on the list of the most recalled car brands is Honda, with 18 total car recalls in 2023. These recalls collectively impacted 3,794,923 vehicles, which makes up roughly 7% of the total. The biggest recalls involved 2,539,902 vehicles due to a faulty fuel pump system, which may cause the engine to stall or not start altogether.
8. Volkswagen
Eighth on our list of most car recalls by brand in 2023 is Volkswagen, also with 18 total recalls.
These car recalls impacted 332,700 vehicles, which accounts for around 7% of the total vehicles. One of the most notable recalls involved a panoramic sunshade glass with questions about whether or not the roof was fire retardant – which included more than 24,000 vehicles.
9. Hyundai
Second to last on our list of the most recalled car brands of 2023 is Hyundai, with 17 total recalls. There were 2,616,762 vehicles recalled, which makes up roughly 6% of the total. More than a dozen of these recalls affected commercial vehicles.
The most notable recall impacted more than 1.6 million vehicles, due to issues with the ABS system spilling brake fluid internally – causing an electrical short.
10. Tesla
The tenth and final entry on our list of the most car recalls by brand is Tesla, with 13 car recalls in 2023. There were 2,470,183 vehicles recalled, accounting for around 5% of the total. The most well-known Tesla recall involved the Model S and X vehicles due to the cabin doors becoming unlocked during a crash – impacting 120,423 vehicles.
